Special section: How to read tire wear ... There are many tire rotation patterns. Any routine pattern is better than no rotation at all. The important factor in a tire rotation pattern is that all tires eventually are placed at all applicable wheel positions.

Tire wear can also be caused by worn struts or shock absorbers. The dampers help keep the tires in contact with the road as it encounters bumps and dips. Wear shocks or struts allow the wheels to bounce too much, which typically results in a cupped wear pattern on the tread.

Based upon my amateur inspection, I beleive my front tires have a feathering wear pattern. I am somewhat unfamiliar with what this means; do I need to get new tire? I just had the wheels aligned. Will this clear up the feathering probelm (i.e., will the tires wear true over time, eliminating the feathering wear pattern)?

Cupping is a perfectly normal tread wear pattern. Still, there are things you can do to help reduce the amount of cupping. One is inflation pressure. Inflation pressure will affect how much cupping you get because it affects the flexing of the tire as it goes into and out of the contact patch.
