It was long thought that Titan was the largest satellite in the solar system but recent observations have shown that Titan's atmosphere is so thick that its solid surface is slightly smaller than Ganymede's. Titan is nevertheless larger in diameter than Mercury and larger and more massive than Pluto.

This picture from NASA's Cassini spacecraft shows Titan's atmosphere. The moon's atmosphere has a layer of haze high above Titan's surface. The haze layer, shown here in purple, can be seen along the edge of the moon.

NASA's Voyager 1 provided the first detailed images of Titan in 1980. They showed only an opaque, orange atmosphere, apparently homogeneous. ... Similarly to Earth, Titan's atmosphere is mostly nitrogen but there is also methane and many other organic compounds.

Titan's atmosphere is remarkably like Earth's, but even more complex and multilayered, according to results from the European Space Agency's Huygens probe. ... But it comes as no great surprise, because Titan's atmosphere is so much thicker. Fulchignoni thinks that some of these upper layers may be quite stable and may...

Titan's atmospheric winds, temperature and mixing have been revealed by new observations from the Cassini spacecraft. ... Titan's atmosphere contains no ozone; however the CIRS results show that a large part of its atmosphere is isolated during the polar night, and that could allow unusual and complex chemistry to occur.

In contrast, the green image shows the immense size of Titan's atmosphere. This is revealed by the fluorescent glow of methane gas, which extends over 700 kilometers (435 miles) above the surface, showing that the atmosphere nearly doubles the size of Titan.

A giant lake full of ethane and methane has been confirmed to exist on Titan. ... Boasting a size that's one-and-a-half times that of Earth's moon and bigger than Mercury, Titan is the only solar system moon known to support a planet-like atmosphere.

Scientists analysing data gathered by the Cassini spacecraft have confirmed the presence of heavy negative ions in the upper regions of Titan's atmosphere. ... Saturn's moon Titan is the second largest in the solar system -- and the only one with a dense atmosphere. The atmosphere, nitrogen and methane, resembles that of...
