Question:  In the years of the American Revolution the country was separated, the Patriots (Whigs) wanted to gain independence from Britain while the Loyalists (Tories) wished to remain loyal to England. What were the views of these Loyalists during the  Revolution, and how were they treated for these views?

The term Tory was used in the American Revolution to describe those who remained loyal to the British Crown and government, or Loyalists. Since early in the eighteenth century, Tory had described those upholding the right of the Kings over parliament.

These people actively supported the Loyalist Cause in the South Carolina Backcountry during the Revolution. Many of these men had some relationship to the Tory, John Mayfield of Browns Creek.

It is, however, seldom that a Patriot has been converted to Toryism, but a few such cases are found, although they generally returned again to the American cause. Nearly all the petitions for favor that we find appear to he from good Tories or those who are weak in the faith.
