The bony point of the hip is called the greater trochanter. It is an attachment point for muscles that move the hip joint. The trochanter has a fairly large bursa overlying it that occasionally becomes irritated, resulting in hip bursitis (trochanteric bursitis).

Trochanteric bursitis is inflammation of the bursa (fluid-filled sac near a joint) at the outside (lateral) point of the hip known as the greater trochanter. When this bursa becomes irritated or inflamed, it causes pain in the hip.

Trochanteric bursitis is relatively common among both physically active and sedentary patients. It can also occur as a complication of arthroscopic surgery of the hip. The overall complication rate is estimated at 1.4%. The fact is that neither racial, sex nor age predilection has been reported.
