My friends and I are disagreeing with each other. They say blood is really blue. I told them its red. And its always red even with the lack of oxygen. Please tell us who is right...and the true color of blood. thanks a lot.

If blood is never purple then why are veins blue/purple? I always thought it was because of the blood but I have to admit that the blood is red when it comes out! That's true even when you take blood out into a syringe so it can't be the contact with the air that changes it's colour.

So, even though blood is drawn by a lab from a vein, as soon as it exits your body it hits oxygen, and that is why the blood in the tube is red. Arterial blood is drawn for pulmonary tests BTW and has a much richer redder color than the blood drawn for regular lab tests from a vein.
