They just made up some stuff and filmed it as though it were true. It isn't based on any legend. SIDE NOTE: ... The movie gave the information the Blair Witch had haunted the area for a long time and was feared because she would kill the children from time to time. The film crew was supposed to prove or disprove the myth.

As I said in my review, I thought the movie The Blair Witch Project was a good, interesting film -- if not a scary one. But what I actually found more interesting than the movie itself was people's reactions to it. ... The producers openly acknowledged that the story was not true, and wasn't even based on a real myth.
