Trust Vs. Mistrust is the first of Erik Erikson's eight stages of personality. Erikson's theory argues that following a life of warmth and regularity and protection from the outside world while in the mother's womb, the infant is faced with a less secure world.

Our disagreement is on crying, of course, and it ties into the Erikson's trust vs mistrust theory. If when an infant is hungry but waiting for his/her bottle to get warm in the crock pot and cries I feel that we should comfort the baby with our words, presence and touch but not necessarily hold them.

My grandson does not cry often at all because his mother and I meet his needs in a timely manner, which allows him to learn to trust that we are there to take care of his needs. He has learned to wait for his bottle as long as we are there to reassure him that it is coming soon.
