Welcome to the Tundra's plant page. On this page you can find information on the plants of the Tundra. ... Because of the fact that plants can not grow their roots out, most of the tundra's plants are low shrubs and trees like dwarf willows and birches less than knee high.

It is hard for plants to grow in the Arctic. Once the snow melts the growing season is short. Even in the summer it is cold and windy and there are just a few months of sunshine. Yet, many different types of plants have adapted to the Arctic tundra.

Cushion Plants Many tundra plants, such as this one, are called cushion plants which means they grow in a low, tight clump and look like a little cushion. Cushion plants are more common in the tundra where their growth habit helps protect them from the cold.

Some plants are able to survive in the tundra. These plants are small. They stay near the ground to avoid the strong wind and cold temperatures. Hairy stems help to keep some plants warm. Plants in the tundra do not come alive until summer when the conditions are just right for growth.

One of the survival strategies of plants is their cool growing temperature. Tundra plants can grow at temperatures 15ºC to 20ºC (27ºF to 36ºF) which is cooler than any other plant in the world. Small and low growing plants are also a characteristic of tundra plants.
