Plant cells always have a strong cell wall surrounding them. When the take up water by osmosis they start to swell, but the cell wall prevents them from bursting. Plant cells become "turgid" when they are put in dilute solutions.

Cells and Genetics question: What is a turgid cell? turgid = swollen A turgid cell is a plant cell whose vacuole contains the maximum amount of water. The water has entered by osmosis, because the vacuole ... Animal cells can swell so much from water that they burst, but plant cells avoid bursting thanks to their cell wall.

They take in water since the outside is hypotonic relative to the inside of the cell. The cell does not burst due to the cell wall, and hence the cell becomes very hard. This is responsible for giving the plant the structure (allowing it to...

Turgid and flaccid are terms that really only apply to cells with cell walls, such as plant cells. Animal cells may shrink or swell when placed in hypertonic and hypotonic solutions, respectively, but they never have turgor because the cell membrane is too weak.

The contents of a plant cell are in some ways very similar to the contents of an animal cell. Both have a cell nucleus, surrounded by a nuclear membrane and this contains the genetic information of the cell in the form of deoxyribonucleic a...
