Most often these stories have been created to teach lessons or prevent people from making the same mistakes that the characters is the story have made. A common theme of various types of folklore is that it is usually unwritten, passed on from generation to generation.

As I've mentioned before, the unique thing about vampires is that every culture across the globe has some sort of vampire legend/folklore. The names and types may differ, but they all relate to vampire: creatures sucking either the lifeblood or the life essence out of their victims.
