We sometimes use the word "nebula" to refer to galaxies, various types of star clusters and various kinds of interstellar dust/gas clouds. More strictly speaking, the word "nebula" should be reserved for gas and dust clouds and not for groups of stars.

There are many types of nebulas. The main types are planetary nebulas; diffuse nebulas; supernova remnants; reflection nebulas and dark nebulas. Planetary nebulas are “skin” (or shells) that an old, average-sized star sheds during the red giant stage.

As more nuclear fuel is consumed, the inner core collapses to a final high density state and the burning in the shell increases in intensity. This state is unstable and the star pulsates, ejecting much of its outer envelope.

Nebulas are large clouds of gas in space often measuring light years in size and are made up of hydrogen, helium and star dust. Nebulas are formed in two ways: (1) from the creation of the solar system or two from the gas left behind from stars that have exploded in a super nova or nova.

Some nebulas are regions where new stars are being formed, while others are the remains of dead or dying stars. Nebulas come in many different shapes and sizes. There are four main types of nebulas: Planetary nebulas, Reflection nebulas, Emission nebulas, and Absorption nebulas.
