Very-large-scale integration - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Very-large-scale integration ( VLSI ) is the process of creating integrated circuits by combining thousands of transistor-based circuits into a single chip. VLSI began in the 1970s when complex sem...

Although students of this textbook need not have done so, they are advised to have studied one of the mentioned VLSI books and to have done some chip design. This will provide the proper background to distinguish VLSI design from more traditional circuit layout.

Research related to circuit design has been put on a back burner; the focus of the group is on different problems. Material on the site may be out of date. Old versions of our placement tools are available, as are some physical design benchmarks.

Without going into details, we can say that the VHDL, can be called as the "C" of the VLSI industry. VHDL stands for "VHSIC Hardware Definition Language", where VHSIC stands for "Very High Speed Integrated Circuit".

We also study circuit compaction when the wires are not rigid, but flexible components of the layout. Most conventional compaction algorithms minimizing the area contain unnecessarily long wires. Keeping the wires as short as possible is, next to minimizing the area, a crucial criterion in chip design.
