Gravity filtration is the method of choice to remove solid impurities from an organic liquid. The "impurity" can be a drying agent or an undesired side product or leftover reactant. Gravity filtration can be used to collect solid product, although generally vacuum filtration is used for this purpose because it is faster.

Figure 1 shows a setup for a vacuum (or suction) filtration using a Hirsch funnel. A vacuum filtration is usually faster than a simple gravity filtration. However, there are several points that have to be considered.

Q: When do you use vacuum filtration? A: Generally when you want to isolate a solid. It is rapid (in most cases) so the slurry being filtered will remain cold - an advantage in cases where the solid is partly soluble in the solvent being used.

Vacuum filtration is often faster than gravity filtration and is most useful if the solid must be kept or if a filtration must be done rapidly. A vacuum from an aspirator or a vacuum pump is used to pull the liquid through a funnel containing a piece of filter paper, while the solid is left on the paper.
