Venus
The length of one day (one rotation around its axis) on
is 2802.0 hours.
That is, a day on Venus takes about 116.8 times as long as a day on Earth.

Venus is the second-closest planet to the Sun, orbiting it every 224.7 Earth days. The planet is named after Venus, the Roman goddess of love. After the Moon, it is the brightest natural object in th...

The rotation period of Venus cannot be decided through telescopic observations of its surface markings because its featureless thick atmosphere makes this impossible.

If that's not strange enough, the rotation of Venus is backwards. Seen from above, all of the planets in the Solar System rotate counter-clockwise. This means that eastern regions see the Sun before western regions.

This page will discuss the retrograde rotation of Venus. Venus moves around the Sun in the same direction (considered to be eastward, or direct motion) as all the other planets, but its rotation is backwards relative to that orbital motion.

Venus spins retrograde (opposite) relative to the earth's movement. The period of rotation of Venus (a Venusian day) is longer the Venusian year by 18.3 days. Venus circles the sun every 224.7 earth days. Most of my sources stated that the Venusian day is 243 earth days long.

The rotation period of Venus could not be measured until the 1960's because its thick clouds prevent us from seeing any feature on the surface. In 1962 radar waves were bounced off the surface of Venus and the rotation period was finally determined.

Tides raised by the Sun in the body of Venus would de-spin the planet in 108 yr if no other torques were acting2. The final state would be one of synchronous rotation (one side always facing the Sun).

Question: Why does Venus rotate in a direction opposite the other planets? Mr. Kiper's 5th period class Answer 1: Class, this is a very good question. There is no good reason for the direction of rotation of any of the planets except what the motion of the matter locally that formed the planet.
