The stamped-back Stainer violin you have is certainly a copy. I don't believe I've seen a commercial Stainer copy going for over $2000, and most are much less expensive. The Smithsonian Institution has a web page on Stainer that will provide illuminating.

last night i checked out this violin and it has the name stainer stamped on the back upperside just below the neck. Inside it reads: jacobus stainer in absam prope oenipontum 1628 (the 28 is written different) sure would be nice if it`s the real thing!!!!

However if your violin is stamped Stainer on the back near where the neck attaches(the button) you have the cheap factory type and the value would be in the $0-$500 range , I wouldn't waste time looking for an appraiser, However if it is not stamped Stainer on the back there are some valuable copies made with the fake...
