As for the vipera lebetina, 99% of cypriots will either try to kill it or run for their lives ! It has unfortunately been the reason for a number of deaths or near-deaths so people are not keen to love them. They are also hated by hunters as they will frequently bite their hunting dogs.

A novel disintegrin, obtustatin, was isolated from the venom of the Vipera lebetina obtusa viper, and represents the first potent and selective inhibitor of the binding of integrin alpha(1)beta(1) to collagen IV. The primary structure of obtustatin contains 41 amino acids and is the shortest disintegrin described to date.
