We encode meanings best of all (semantic encoding). Sounds (acoustic) and sights (visual) encoding we don't remember so well. It is useful to learn using imagery. Mnemonic devices like peg words, and method of loci are useful, as is Chunking, where information is broken into meaningful units or chunks.
