Radio astronomers have found the biggest hole ever seen in the universe. The void, which is nearly a billion light years across, is empty of both normal matter ... Until now, optical surveys have found no voids larger than 80 megaparsecs wide - making the new hole 40 times larger in volume than the previous record holder.

A mere 5 per cent of the universe is filled with galaxy clusters, the other 95 per cent is mysterious voids. There are plenty of small voids, but the bigger they get the rarer they become. No one expected one 900 million light years across.

Voids, sheets & filaments: Deep redshift surveys reveal a very bubbly structure to the universe with galaxies primarily confined to sheets and filaments.

Cosmic voids really are devoid of matter. Astronomers have found that even the pervasive 'dark matter' which accounts for about 80% of the mass of the universe is not present in these voids, which are areas of vast emptiness in space that can be tens of millions of light-years across.

Astronomers have known for years that, on large scales, the Universe has voids largely empty of matter. However, most of these voids are much smaller than the one found by Rudnick and his colleagues. In addition, the number of discovered voids decreases as the size increases.

And while it's not the first void to be discovered in the universe, it is the largest, said Lawrence Rudnick of the University of Minnesota. ... "What we've found is not normal, based on either observational studies or on computer simulations of the large-scale evolution of the universe," Williams said.

Matter in the Universe is distributed at large scales as in a kind of foam, with large voids that contain hardly any galaxies (or none at all), and with filaments in between that contain almost all galaxies.

Cosmic voids are areas devoid of both normal material, such as stars, galaxies and gas, and the mysterious “dark matter” that is also common in the universe. Voids seem to be rarer the bigger they are, astronomers said.

Actively growing supermassive black holes in centers of galaxies are common even in cosmic voids, the most rarefied and empty regions of the universe. ... This is a "slice" of about 700 million light-years across in the distribution of galaxies in the universe. Voids are marked as blue circles, and galaxies within as red...
