all resistors are 5 or 10 percent tolerance, 1/4-watt all capacitors are 10 percent tolerance this circuit rougly doubles the voltage of the input, however the current output is low. doubled output is at 'V source.' Return to: Schematics Depot, or Power Circuits;

The explanation for this is the turn-on voltage of D2. The turn-on voltage for the Si 1N4007 is about 0.7 V, and notice that the output voltage is about 7.2 Volts, very close to 8V-.7V. From this, a better name for this circuit would be a voltage doubler.

A voltage doubler application is a DC power supply capable of using either a 240 VAC or 120 VAC source. The supply uses a switch selected full-wave bridge to produce about 300 VDC from a 240 VAC source. The 120 V position of the switch rewires the bridge as a doubler producing about 300 VDC from the 120 VAC.
