In 1896, Handy joined W. A. Mahara’s Minstrels, as its bandleader. He stayed with the group for several years. Handy worked with a few other bands and ended up in Memphis in the early 1900s. William Christopher Handy, the "Father of the Blues," was born in Florence, Alabama, on November 16, 1873. Both his father and grandfather were ministers. He got his first lessons on the cornet in a barber shop, not an unusual spot for musical lessons at the time.

In addition to composing, Handy worked laboriously at compiling blues tunes which he published in a book called Blues: An Anthology in 1926. He later published Negro Authors And Composers of the United States (1935), and Unsung Americans Sung (1944). His biography, Father of the Blues was published in 1941.
