When you cool water below its freezing point, it wants to form ice. But it needs someplace to start, or nucleate, the growth of ice crystals.

name Shannon status educator age 20s Question - The freezing point of water is 32 degrees Celsius. Is this the temperature at which water freezes, or does water freeze below 32 degrees? The reason I ask is that I am an editing a children's text book explaining the basics of weather.

Everybody knows 0 degrees on the Celsius scale is the freezing point of water and 100 degrees is the boiling point. On the Fahrenheit scale, however, freezing is 32 degrees and boiling 212.

Pressure has an effect on the freezing point (or melting point) of water, though it isn't as substantial as the effect of pressure on boiling point. We could say that these values are at standard pressure, but realistically there is no noticeable difference of water's freezing point at various altitudes on earth.

At the right is a container of water with an ice cube in it. The water and ice are at 0°C, which is the melting point of ice and the freezing point of water. Molecules of ice are constantly escaping into the water (melting), and molecules of water are being captured on the surface of the ice (freezing).

Water freezes at 32o Fahrenheit (F) and boils at 212o F (at sea level, but 186.4° at 14,000 feet). In fact, water's freezing and boiling points are the baseline with which temperature is measured: 0o on the Celsius scale is water's freezing point, and 100o is water's boiling point.

The string lies in the puddle of melted salt water. As the salt water is diluted by further melting of the ice cube, the freezing point rises. The water refreezes attaching the string to the ice cube. This “depression” by salt of the freezing point of water is also seen ... Changing the Freezing Point of Water with Salt...
