West African republic. In 1822 the American Colonization Society (founded in 1816) chose this region to settle freed slaves. Liberia became independent in 1847. Its prosperity declined but returned with the sale of rubber plantation concessions to the Firestone Company (an American manufacturer) in 1926.

West African republic, settled by Mende and Temne peoples in about 1400. About 400 black veterans resettled here by the British in 1787 were followed by blacks from Nova Scotia and maroons from Jamaica. It became a British colony in 1808 and a protectorate in 1896, independent in 1961.
