The gouges in the otherwise glacially polished surface are called crescentic gouges. They appear to form when large rocks are pushed down with great force into the underlying surface, creating a conical fracture.

Crescentic gouges on a rock knob west of The Pond. The fracture surfaces dip towards the top of the picture, indicating ice movement in that direction. Faint striae can also be seen. ... Crescentic gouges are convex in the direction of flow. Lunate fractures are concave in the direction of flow. Crescentic fractures are...

Any curved mark or fracture produced by plucking or chipping of the glacier's bed. Larger than chatter marks, typically the horns of these gouges point up glacier. Also called Lunate Fracture or Crescentic Mark.

Crescentic gouges and lunate fractures with main fractures dipping upstream and crescentic fractures apparently dipping in the same direction were observed on a glacial pavement developed in the glacial sequence of the Tubarao Group.

Glacial flow indicators include striations, grooves, rat tails, crescentic gouges and fractures, chattermarks, roches moutonnées, bedrock steps and crag-and-tails. These features are thought to have been formed by the scouring action of sliding basal ice.

The sense of ice flow was defined by crescentic fractures and rat tails on both sides of this composite landform. The age relationship could not be determined. The area is located on the axis of the ... NW oriented striations and crescentic gouges (1) are preserved on the lee-side (south) of the main striated surfaces.

Systematic ice flow indicator mapping was carried out in the Kaminak Lake (NTS 55L), Ferguson Lake (NTS 65I), MacQuoid Lake (NTS 55M), Gibson Lake (NTS 55N), Thirty Mile Lake The sense of movement was derived from rat tails, crescentic features, chattermarks and roches moutonnées, and from stoss and lee relations.

Materials in the ice can also chip or fracture the underlying bedrock to form features like crescentic gouges, or leave a line of nested crescentic fractures called chattermarks.
