We compared the dispersal morphologies, fruit sizes, and spatial distributions of 561 tree species within a fully mapped, 50-hectare plot of primary tropical forest in peninsular Malaysia. We demonstrate here that the extent and scale of conspecific spatial aggregation is correlated with the mode of seed dispersal.

WHY DO SEEDS DISPERSE TO FORM NEW PLANTS? ... If the seeds simply fell and grew beneath the parent plants they would be too overcrowded and would be starved of nutrients. So it is important that the seeds are dispersed over a wide area where they stand a better chance of finding the right condition to grow ... 1: Wind dispersal...

Answer: Seeds can be dispersed in four ways: 1. Wind dispersal: dandelions have fruits with parachutes of hairs that catch ... In the case of mistletoe, the sticky fruits are eaten by birds which then clean their beaks on the bark of trees, leaving behind a sticky seed which can grow into a new mistletoe plant on the tree.

Discuss the four methods of seed dispersal including by wind dispersal, by attachment to fur or feathers, by passing through an animal's gut, or by animals moving the seeds. Give the children at least one seed using each method of dispersal and see if they can guess which one uses which method.

There are 3 main mechanisms for seed and fruit dispersal: (1) Hitchhiking on animals, (2) Drifting in ocean or fresh water, and (3) Floating in the wind. This article concerns one of the most remarkable of all seed dispersal methods, riding the wind and air currents of the world.
