I will say, however, that GERD doesn't usually come with a heightened sense of smell. I would see a gastroenterologist about the stomach issues, and when you're there, bring up the smell thing. Your gastro doctor might send you to a neurologist about that.

I have read about people who have lost their sense of smell. I have the opposite problem. For several weeks, on and off, I have a strong smell from within my nostrils. It is quite irritating - not particularly unpleasant, just annoying.

The most likely problem is that you have in fact suffered some loss of smell, which can sometimes be associated with odorant distortions. For example, sometimes a cold or viral upper respiratory infection will cause one to partially lose the sense of smell.

Now you bring up a good point about the increased sense of smell and trouble in the brain. You are absolutely correct, we don't know exactly how the brain works. If we have lesions in a certain area, I would suspect that you may indeed have a heightened sense of smell.
