Code P0401 -- EGR insufficient flow, 1997 F150, 4.6L 1997 - 2003 F150 ... Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0401 indicates that Continuous Memory Self-Test has detected insufficient EGR flow. Possible causes: Fault in vacuum supply to EGR vacuum regulator solenoid. EGR valve stuck closed or iced.

These things work together to deliver the correct amount of recirculation based on engine temperature, load, etc. The P0401 code means that OBD detected an insufficient amount of EGR.

I have a 97 F150 4.6L throwing a P0401 (EGR insufficient flow). I think I have a bad EGR Vacuum Regulator solenoid. I've disconnected the green vacuum line from the EGR Vacuum Regulator solenoid to the EGR valve and applied a slight vacuum to the EGR valve.

EGR flow was now more carefully controlled with dual diaphragm and back-pressure EGR valves. Modulating the vacuum to the EGR valve's pull, open diaphragm controlled the flow of recirculated ex- haust.

I had a CEL with P0401 (EGR Flow Insufficient) and P0402 (EGR Flow Excessive) and it turned out that the DPFE was sticking. It's a pretty cheap fix, I had it done at the dealer for $80. ...
