What you experienced was a conditional threat. That doesn't mean they can't do anything, but they may be going by what they know of prosecution policy in your county. In their place, however, I would want to follow-up enough to at least be satisfied there was no actual danger.

No, so far it's all just nasty verbiage. He didn't threatened to kill you or do bodily harm, or kidnap your son, etc. Something along those lines would constitute a threat.
