Pinfish are great bait for a wide variety of species; they are easy to catch and are found all over the shallow waters of the Suncoast. Put a little bit of bait (squid works very well) on about a #2 or #4 hook and toss it over some grassy bottom - it won’t be long before the well is full of ‘pins.

Don’t leave a Shrimp on the bottom for long though, a Pinfish will eat a Large Shrimp faster than a New York minute. Use live and cut Mullet or the Pinfish themselves for bait if your soaking bait for longer than several minutes.

However, the tube bait has one drawback – if you’re fishing in an area with a lot of pinfish, they’ll eat the tentacles off your tubes. That was a serious problem for us in this tournament. If there’s enough redfish around to eat the tube before the pinfish reach it, I prefer to fish the Strike King tube.
