Protozoa mainly feed on bacteria, but they also eat other protozoa, and sometimes fungi. Some protozoa absorb food through their cell tissues. Others, surround food and engulf it. Others have openings called mouth pores into which they sweep food.

Protozoa are single-celled animals that feed primarily on bacteria, but also eat other protozoa, soluble organic matter, and sometimes fungi. They are several times larger than bacteria – ranging from 1/5000 to 1/50 of an inch (5 to 500 µm) in diameter.

Protozoa play an important role in the structure of the soil food web. Protozoa eat bacteria and release nitrogen and other nutrients in their waste. Since protozoa are concentrated near plant roots, the plant can benefit from this supply of nutrients.

Learn more about protozoa. Check out our protozoa animal section. ... Protozoa eat tiny algae and bacteria. Some protozoa absorb food through their cell membrane. Others surround and engulf their food or have openings to collect food. They digest their food in stomach-like compartments called vacuoles.

The way this works is the protozoa eat the nitrogen-rich bacteria but they can't handle that much nitrogen in their bodies. They have to get rid of most of the nitrogen they ate so they release it as ammonium (NH4+). This usually occurs near the roots of a plant.

There are 60,000 species of protozoa living in all types of environments. Some protozoa eat other one-celled organisms called bacteria. Others eat other protozoa. Some are parasites on other animals including humans, and cause disease, such as malaria and dysentery.

in Germany have found that some protozoa which are sensitive to large amounts of DMSP lyase can survive on algae that make only small amounts of the enzyme. Even protozoa that eat high-enzyme-producing algae prefer the low producers, they report in the June 26 Nature.
