The slug crawls over it's food to eat. Slugs eat various leafy plants. A few favorite foods are cucumber and oxylis. Oxylis is a common plant in the Northwest, growing in fields. It has three leaves and basically looks like a large, light-green clover.

I also strongly suspect that birds not only do not eat them, but they don't eat the dead slugs either. They're clever! Even if they do, well, I think its justified for a short time. I don't have a dog and don't use them in the front garden.
