During the fall is when you see most wooly bears crossing the roads...they are simply trying to get warmth from the asphalt, which soaks up the sun and becomes hot. The woolybears also eat clover. I am a second grade teacher and I bring in caterpillars for the students all of the time.

Wooly bears eat virtually any grassy plants, and be sure to keep them fed or they will eat each other! Also, If you don't feed them enough, then they won't be able to build up enough food reserves to make a cocoon.

Definitely give it something to eat, most tiger moth larvae eat grasses, though the group includes the fall webworm that eats tree leaves (those do not look like classic wooly bears).

Wooly bears are not particular when it comes to food, and they will eat just about anything growing in meadows, pastures and along the edges of a woods. Don't worry if you find wooly bears in your garden.

A friend once said that if you go by woolly bears you can expect the winter to be brown in the middle and black on both ends, and I think that makes at least as much ... if something doesn’t eat it or step on it, it will greet the spring as an Isabella moth and set about the business of procreating the next generation.
