During the fall is when you see most wooly bears crossing the roads...they are simply trying to get warmth from the asphalt, which soaks up the sun and becomes hot. The woolybears also eat clover. I am a second grade teacher and I bring in caterpillars for the students all of the time.

Wooly bears eat virtually any grassy plants, and be sure to keep them fed or they will eat each other! Also, If you don't feed them enough, then they won't be able to build up enough food reserves to make a cocoon.
