When you format your hard disk, it will not permanently delete your files from the disk. Operating system actually mark the formatted area as available. Thats why sometimes you can recover files from a disk even when it's formatted.

Step 4 - If you can see a square hole at the top left corner of the disk your disk is locked. You will not be able to format the disk if it is locked. Slide the block down until it clicks into place in the bottom of the rectangular space at the top left side of the disk.

i can load a cd or dvd...blank or with info...i get the disk image attached to my arrow...but when i go into 'my computer' and click on the disk image..drive d...i get a message asking me if i want to format it...if i say yes..it replies that it can't...if i say no...nothing happens..i can't access the disk ;
