I was just wondering ... Ignorance originally meant having had no reason to know about, wonder about or to investigate or define a thing. ... Ignorance was bliss because one could be happy in ignorance of a thing so long as it didn't affect you, or make you put forth any effort in regard to it.

Ignorance is bliss means that sometimes you are better off not understanding something. This could be because you might be happier not knowing bad information because it could emotionally drag you down.

Gotta say, "ignorance is bliss" always meant to me that knowledge doesn't necessarily result in happiness. Ignorance may not be bliss, but it usually doesn't keep anyone from it--a good thing for those of us less gifted with cranial capacity.
