True polar wander - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
True polar wander is a phenomenon in which a planet or moon changes its orientation so that different points become the North and South Poles. This can happen when the two larger moments of inertia a...

Polar wander - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
' Polar wander ' is the phenomenon in which the North and South Poles of the Earth move with respect to the continents. This motion can be divided into two components, that due to continental drift ...

Pole shift hypothesis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The pole shift hypothesis is the hypothesis that the axis of rotation of a planet has not always been at its present-day locations or that the axis will not persist there; in other words, that its p...

Polar wandering is not simply the movements of the continents. We need to define three different terms: apparent polar wander, magnetic polar wander, and true polar wander. Apparent polar wander is what you have described (a case where a continent drifted over the pole).

(1) propose that true polar wander (TPW) occurred during the Cambrian (520 to 535 Ma). This conclusion is based on (i) apparently high drift rates from Gondwana-Laurentia, (ii) an anomalous pole reading from Siberia, and (iii) reinterpretation of polarity from a Vendian pole reading from Baltica.

We reexamined the Late Cretaceous-early Tertiary apparent polar wander path for the Pacific plate using 27 paleomagnetic poles from seamounts dated by 40Ar/39Ar geochronology.

The Zetas, whoever they are, say that a polar shift will occur as part of the millennial transformation. First, they say, a comet’s tail will sweep the Earth, actually stopping the planet’s rotation for a few days, resulting in violent lightning, wind, and fire storms.

In the decades before plate tectonics was accepted, the orientation of the ancient magnetic field was a severe puzzle. A grain of magnetite (or any other magnetic mineral) naturally tends to point toward the poles, like a miniature compass ...

Using recalculated paleopoles from seamount anomaly modeling (SAM), Sager and Koppers (2000) proposed an episode of rapid Late Cretaceous true polar wander (TPW). A critical review of the data used, however, suggests that Sager and Koppers have underestimated the effects that errors and data selection have on inferences...

(4) Another original concept is that the Cambrian Evolutionary explosion may have been precipitated in part by large burst of true polar wander, in which the Earth's rotational axis moved to the equator in a geologically short interval to of time, and (5) that the burst of biomineralization observed in the fossil record...
