Assigned to the Puget Sound Navy Yard, at Bremerton, Washington, Chief Carey was employed on World War I era training duties and as an athletic coach. In June 1919, Chief Boatswain's Mate Carey transferred from the Reserves to the regular Navy, continuing his service at the Puget Sound Navy Yard until his health failed.
