A viral tegument or tegument is a cluster of proteins that lines the space between the envelope and nucleocapsid of many enveloped viruses. The tegument generally contains proteins that aid in vir...

Affinity chromatography was used to identify cellular proteins that interact with the herpes simplex virus (HSV) tegument protein VP22. Among a small set of proteins that bind specifically to VP22, we identified TAF-I (template-activating factor I), a chromatin remodelling protein and close homologue of the...

The study demonstrated that the 38 kDa tegument protein VP22 bound specifically to the gD tail. This association was dependent on arginine and lysine residues at positions 5 and 6 in the gD tail. In addition, HSV-1 capsids bound the gD tail and exhibited a similar sequence dependence.

90-kDa tyrosine-phosphorylated protein that we identified as the HSV tegument protein VP11/12. Inasmuch as VP11/12 produced in fibroblasts and epithelial cells is not obviously tyrosine phosphorylated, these data suggested that VP11/12 serves as the substrate of a cell-type-specific protein tyrosine kinase.

The ORF 3 encoded a predicted protein of 601 aa (M(r) 67.5 kDa) which exhibited limited homology (18% overall identity) with the UL47 protein (major tegument protein) of HSV-1 [2].
