I love a professional, especially one who will roll up his/her sleeves and get down to it. A good sleeve placket cut to 6″ deep will make rolling up those sleeves so much easier. I think David Page Coffin’s placket in his Shirtmaking book, is the best I’ve found anywhere.

For the classic shirt sleeve placket, use a strip of fabric twice as wide and approx. 2" (5 cm) longer than the finished opening (plus seam allowance). Transfer all markings to placket and sleeve pieces. The placket is always attached to the opening edge that is farthest from sleeve seam.

When you consider that the sample shirt was probably sewn by a 12 year old, it might make you feel a little inadequate since you didn't think of this one-long-strip method of sewing a sleeve placket.
