Is it a purely a performance issue, or are there things you can/can't do with a split backplane you can't/can do without one? And if one has a split-backplane, how is it best to configure the drives on it, say three or four RAID drives, one being a hot-spare?

A split backplane is often used to handle a large number of signals. Split backplane configurations will divide bus connections between two motherboards (one on either side of the daughterboards). Using two motherboards shortens the path of connections to daughterboards and often improves performance.
