Dead and live loads - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In mechanical and structural engineering, live loads and dead loads are two kinds of forces exerted on an object. The concepts are used especially where analysis of real-world objects is required....

Structural load - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Structural loads are forces applied to a component of a structure or to the structure as a unit. In structural design, assumed loads are specified in national and local design codes for types of stru...

"If a member has a small t.a., it is likely that a fairly high unit live load could be imposed over that entire small surface area... It is less likely that a large t.a. will be uniformly loaded by the same high unit load considered for a small t.a. member." (Design of Wood Structures by D. Breyer)

The code further states the exact formulas to use when taking live load reductions for the above structural elements. Their is a 60% maximum reduction for vertical members, which is more of a reduction than the standard 40%. Hope this helps;

For multiple stories of live load ASCE 7 does not provide clear guidance, however HUD has published some intresting 'Residential Construction Design Guide' and 'Structural Design Loads for One- and Two-Family Dwellings' which provide intresting perspective on load combinations and reductions.

Reliability of structural members with nonlinear material property subjected to combined live load processes is studied. In addition, the relationship between linear and nonlinear structural response is examined for different elastic limits both in load exceedances and in damage duration...

For a "typical" garage layout, a space is about 8 ft by 20 ft. Using Paul's truck, that works out to be 55 psf. So if you valet parked the BIG trucks end-to-end you arrive at a load generally consistent with the design live load.
