The coil of the interposing relay should require less voltage and current than the driving relay is rated for, and the contacts of the interposing relay must be rated to handle the requirements of the load (solenoid, light, contactor, motor, etc.). As James says, many people ask why is the "second" relay necessary and...

Traditionally, these interposing relay circuits, regarded only as unimportant auxiliary functions, have been custom-designed and installed to suit each system. This typically requires hand wiring and powering of each relay.

Discrete output circuits from a DCS typically use low power level signals (transistors, micro relays) which cannot be sent directly to the field devices such as electromagnetic valves or motor control circuits. That is why interposing relays are often necessary. ... intermediate relay ... English translation: interposing relay...

There's an old familiar saying that things aren't always what they seem. ... In what was thought to be an unrelated issue, we had several substation fires occur in the wiring of the SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) remote interposing relay modules and in the control switch wiring.

I could also install a interposing relay to give me a NO and NC. I'm curious as to the scheme with overload elements on both sides of the contactor. I'm not sure what you mean about the transformer. Also couldn't find the NEC article prohibiting control voltages above 150 to ground from leaving the starter enclosure.

This will eliminate most of your transducers and interposing relay panels. You'll also get redundant readings for the same data points so you can cross-check the accuracy of data you're gathering. Watch out for data overload doing this, as you'll be able to gather information you'd only dreamed about before.

TechTopics Topic: Interposing Relay Requirements; Remote control of circuit breakers is becoming much more prevalent as the use of monitoring and central control equipment grows. When remote control is used, interposing relays are generally required to avoid a large voltage drop in the close and trip coil circuits.
