THX Surround EX is the Extended Surround version of Dolby Digital 5.1, while DTS-ES is that of DTS 5.1. The difference between the new Extended Surround formats and their 5.1-channel surround sound counterparts is the addition of a surround back channel, whose corresponding speaker is placed behind the audience.

If you don't have a DTS decoder and a surround setup, you won't notice a difference. On my DTS capable Kenwood reciever, the audio quality is much better with DTS as opposed to Dolby 5.1. ... I'm watching on a Sony WEGA with surround, but don't detect any fantastic change between discs. Either my system is too sucky...

A Philips surround set (5.1 speakers of course) with SACD (6 in, amplify, 6 out) ,Dolby 5.1/DTS decoder, ... Nothing gets "converted to 5:1". A Pro-Logic or DD decoder will create 3:1 from a normal stereo signal. Left, right and rear mono plus a center channel which is extracted from the difference between left and right.
