shellac dries quickly and is very hard and brittle...much harder than lacquer, varnish, polyurethane, etc. (shellac is so hard, it was used to make old 45 & 78 rpm records)... a shellac film is also food ... i don't know if this info helps or confuses more, but now, at least you know some of the differences between the two. ric..
