Q. My contract calls for contractor to sand, prime and paint. It says: "Owner to provide paint" The contractor wants us to buy the primer too, but it only calls for us to provide paint. The difference between a primer and paint is that primers have less pigment (chiefly titanium dioxide) -- this helps them to stick better, which is the sole intended purpose for primers, i.e., first coats.

What is the difference between primer and sealer? To my knowledge 3 coats primer should always go on bear metal and over filler work, and can be used to fill in LIGHT scratches. You would then block sand it with wet 320 and then paint the car.
