Previous works on the structure and functions of the Asterid pyloric caeca are summarized, and from all sources of evidence it is concluded that these organs function in digestion of food which passes into them from the stomach, in absorption of the products of digestion, and in storage of reserves.

Pisaster and Asterias are capable of regenerating all 5 pairs of pyloric caeca at once, at rates somewhat slower than those involved in single-pair replacement. The return of function in these caecumless animals has been charted by observation of feeding behavior and digestive capability.

The anatomical proximity and embryological relationship of the pyloric caeca (PC) and small intestine of rainbow trout has led to the frequent assumption, on little evidence, that they have the ... Finally, we correlated NaPi cotransporter gene expression and function to traditional indices of dietary P deficiency.
