The mood of story is the feeling the author gives you as you are reading it. Of course, this can be pretty subjective, as a story that makes me feel happy, may make others feel sad. Hopefully, not too much.

Thus begins many an unpublished story. That overused first line tries to set the mood of the story, but unless a creepy-voiced narrator utters the words, we don't really get a sense of mood. It's going to take a little more creative description.
