The origin of hand-clapping unrelated to applause is even more tenuous. I think we can assume that it may have been a way to generate sound and attract attention long before full-time bipedalism was the norm.

Does anyone have any information on the origin of applause as a sign to express appreciation or approval? When did the linke between applause and expression of approval originate? Why are audiences expected to applaud after a performance?

I do not think that hand-clapping as applause is universal, though - in some cultures, stomping feet is the proper practice to symbolize approval after a performance. In fact, you can see this with musicians in orchestras, who will stomp their feet on the stage in lieu of clapping.
