If you have ever seen a cow or other animal couched on its forelegs casually chewing and slobbering profusely, then you have likely seen an animal chewing the cud. They're completely detached from reality in most of their complaints about how we treat animals. Certainly much of what we do in the raising and slaughter of animals is cruel. But I heard a caller to NPR complain today that to train a dog to serve us is to misuse the dog because the dog has its own needs.

it states that hares chew the cud. Hares are not usually known as cud-chewing, or ruminating, animals. Is this really an error in the Bible, or did Moses know what he was talking about? When a cow swallows a mouthful of grass, it goes first of all to one compartment of the stomach referred to as the rumen.
