Industrial minerals are mined thoughout North Carolina in the Mountain, Piedmont and Coastal Plain provinces. Sand and gravel are mined in about half the counties and a variety of igneous and metamorphic rocks are quarried in many Mountain and Piedmont counties for the production of crushed stone and dimension stone.
