These small "Whelk" snails, about 0.5 inch (1 cm) live buried in sand and emerge to eat foods high in protein, such as excess meaty fish foods and/or dead or dying animals. They do not consume algae and should not exceed a few per square foot of sandbed surface.

The Lightning Whelk is a “left-handed,” or sinistral, univalve. That is to say, the spiral of this snail shell turns left rather than right. Most univalves/gastropods are right-handed, or dextral, shells. The sturdy shell may reach a height of 10 to even 15 inches.

The shell of a whelk snail is made out of calcium carbonate and is a popular home for the hermit crab. Whelk snails are scavengers and carnivores. They have an extensible proboscis, tipped with a radula, with which they bore small round holes through the shells of crabs, lobsters, and other crustaceans.

Can anyone shed some light on this snail? I have only had one response to this Id in another forum and the person thought it was a Whelk? I'm not sure.
