Betsy Byars was born on August 7,1928 in Charlotte, North Carolina. She attended Furman University from 1946-1948 and received a bachelor's degree from Queens College in 1950. Ms. Byars has written over 35 books for children and won numerous awards, including the Newbery Medal in 1971 for Summer of the Swans(1970).
